At the age of 16, I would have never expected something as simple as young love to ruin friendships. When it happened to me, I was in shock. We were suppose to be in love, right? It started as soon as I met her, the crazy girl who would tear me apart. I knew I wanted her to be mine, it was that simple.
I never understood the effect that this had on me until recently. My mom tended to get mad at life and take it out on my little sister and me by beating us. From third to ninth grade I lived an awkward life. I grew apart from my mother and sister; I hardly talked to anyone for that matter. One thing I was close with was my grades, I knew that education was the one thing no one would be able to take away from me. Katherine Paterson's Happy or Unhappy Ending Happiness seems different for all the characters, for Gilly happiness isn't something she has been able to experience yet.
Friendship means familiar and liking of each other's mind. People who are friends talk to each other and spend time together. They trust one another and also help each other when they are in trouble or are hurt. Friends are people that can be looked up to and trusted.
A friend is not someone that is always there for you when you need help, but someone that you are always there for when they need help. Friendship carries with it the responsibility to always treat the relationship with consideration and it is never to be abused. Trust comes into a friendship when your experience has shown that the other person acts with consistency and never seeks to harm you and you have come to know that, within the structure of your friendship, they will always be up front and honest with you.
