Using NASA satellite images and machine learning, researchers with The University of Texas at Austin have mapped changes in the landscape of northwestern Belize over a span of four decades, finding significant losses of forest and wetlands, but also successful regrowth of forest in established conservation zones that protect surviving structures of the ancient Maya. The research serves as a case study for other rapidly developing and tropical regions of the globe, especially in places struggling to balance forest and wetland conservation with agricultural needs and food security. Belize has served as our long-term environmental research laboratory for this global dilemma. The periods were chosen to correspond with rapid changes in the agricultural system and conservation initiatives. The Landsat program, which has been recording images of Earth since , is currently on its eighth satellite.
At least seventy-five percent of its original forest cover is still standing, occupying vast, biologically rich tracts over , square miles in all. Its forests provide the habitat for about species of mammals, 20, species of plants, 1, species of trees and species of birds, half of which are endemic to the island. Rare plants and animals like the largest orchid, the largest butterfly, the longest lizard, the largest pigeon and the smallest parrot ever registered live in these forests. The forests also constitute the home of the indigenous peoples, the Maisin. For the Maisin, forests provide everything from food and medicinal plants, to materials for houses, canoes and tools.
